Elder Abuse

What is elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation? It’s taking money from an elderly person. It’s pushing or shoving them. It’s leaving them unattended when they cannot care for themselves.

It is estimated that every year 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse.  And what’s even more disturbing is that studies estimate that only 1 in 14 cases are reported to authorities.

The offenders are not always strangers preying on the vulnerable – often abuse comes from people seniors trust the most. Abusers may be spouses, family members or professionals in a position of trust. The victims may be your neighbor, your loved one or even yourself.

If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, there is help available. Contact the Elder Abuse Prevention and Victims of Crime Assistance Program through LifeLong Links. The first step in stopping the abuse is to report the abuse.
