Think About Community Support

Many elders want the option to “age in place” meaning they want to remain in their home and community. Many individuals with disabilities desire to live within their communities near friends and family members. Families that have a member who needs daily assistance may need resources to assist them in meeting those needs. Your community may provide help when the efforts to care for your needs, combined with help from family and friends, is not adequate. Local, state, or federal programs, as well as private businesses may provide assistance.

Think about the following questions for yourself or your family member:

  • What help does my community offer so I can stay in my own home?
  • What if my family member needs more help than I can provide?
  • What if I cannot drive and need transportation?
  • What supports are available to help me live independent from my family?
